Gorse Hill

A new hotel and conference facility in the Surrey countryside with a BREEAM Very Good rating, for Active Hospitality at their Gorse Hill estate.

The new ‘Garden Suite’ provides flexible function, hospitality and meeting spaces in a traditionally styled building designed to sit within grounds of a Grade II-listed mansion house near Woking.

Synergy Architects had undertaken several projects for the previous owners of the site, including earlier permissions for the ‘Garden Suite’. Following Active Hospitality’s acquisition of Gorse Hill, Synergy Architects were tasked with refining the proposals and achieving revised planning and listed building consents to suit the new owner’s ambitions.

The external finishes for the new ‘Garden Suite’ building complement the appearance of the listed mansion house, with banded render, clay tiled roof and stone dressings, as well as a curved entrance portico. Behind the traditional façade sits a steel structural frame with lightweight non-structural partitions. This construction offers potential future flexibility and assisted with a quick construction programme.

The development was carried out under a design-and-build contract and Synergy worked with the main contractor, Paton Development, throughout construction to provide a seamless service and ensure continuity of design.

The building was completed in spring 2019.
