Private House, Warwickshire
Synergy Architects were appointed to complete the re-design of a large three-storey period house in the Warwickshire countryside. Interior design services were also provided.
Based on a layout originally by others, the brief was to provide a modern ‘white box’ interior that maintained the existing historic building shell. Externally additions of new dormer windows and glass porticos were sensitively detailed to complement the period features of the existing building.
The development greatly reduced the energy consumption of the building, which was achieved by super insulating the building fabric and adding solar water heating in combination with the latest high-efficiency boilers. Stack effect passive ventilation was also used in conjunction with an open-plan ground floor and a triple-height entrance foyer. Ground source heat pumps, biomass fuels and CHP boilers were also considered in detail but ruled out due to payback periods.
